1. Fortune Poker operates on the Speilo G2 owned Boss Media International Poker Network which saw a traffic decline of nearly 50% in 2012. It is now down to a seven day average of only 330 cash game players. A warning notice on the site’s home page lays out the timetable for the shutdown.

  3. Most poker sites set rake levels as a percentage of the pot, and charge rake in predetermined increments. For example, a low rake poker site might charge 5% per $1 in a pot. This translates to $0.

If you're like a lot of poker players who will be at the World Series of Poker this summer, you'll be seeking out the cash games not only at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino, but elsewhere in Las Vegas, too.

I thought it would be worthwhile to give players an idea of what to expect with regard to both the rake and comps offered at other Las Vegas cash rooms. I've put all of this information together in one chart below for your easy review when you go to Las Vegas. This way, you'll know the rooms that give you the best value while you play, showing you where you'll pay the least and earn the most.

Conversely, when the rake is lower, or time-rake, a LAG approach might become more acceptable, as fighting to win many small pots will have meaning to your bottom line too. This fact is one of the reasons why poker nits can be winning players at lower / micro stake games (where the rake is typically higher – relative to the size of the pot. GGPoker offers the most popular poker variants, including Texas Hold’em and Omaha, alongside unique games such as Fortune Spin and All-In or Fold. From freerolls and unique formats like Fortune Spin and Bounty Hunter to the Sunday majors, we have tournaments to suit all tastes at GGPoker. All games are available at a range of stakes.

Most casual players pay little or no attention to the cost of playing poker. But there is a cost, as we serious players know. It's called the 'rake' — the amount that the house takes out of every pot. Sometimes the rake is the difference between a player winning or losing money in a public poker room.

The lowest rake in Las Vegas at this time is $3 maximum per pot, while the highest is $5 maximum.

Not all rooms rake the same amount. The lowest rake in Las Vegas at this time is $3 maximum per pot, while the highest is $5 maximum.

Similarly, many rooms offer players compensation for playing poker in their casino. It's generally not nearly as much as they offer to players who want to play 'house advantage' games like blackjack, slots or craps. But it can add up, with some rooms paying considerably more in 'comps' than others.

Some poker rooms offer nothing at all to players, while others offer as much as $2 per hour. Most pay around $1 an hour or thereabouts.

At face value, it might seem like the rake and comps are too insignificant to make much of a difference. But think about this. A room that charges a $5 maximum rake is charging 25 percent more than a room that charges a $4 maximum rake. Similarly, a room that gives players $2 an hour in comps is paying 100 percent more than a room that pays only $1 an hour to its players.

Some practices regarding the rake are fairly standard from room to room. All rooms take out the rake at roughly 10 percent increments. Nearly all follow the rule that there is no rake if the betting ends before the flop (a.k.a., the 'no flop, no drop' rule).

In the chart below, I refer to the maximum or cap on the rake. Meanwhile the comps refer to the amount per hour that a player earns that can usually be used on hotel rooms, beverages and food. Some places also allow comps to be spent on other casino merchandise.

Keep in mind that just as rooms change the games they spread, they also change their rake and comps from time to time. If you want to be certain about the most current information about each room, I suggest you check with them directly beforehand.

One other note about the rake. Most rooms offer bad beat jackpots and/or other promotions. These promotions are nearly always paid for by the players with additional 'jackpot drops.' Though this money is returned to the players, it still comes out of the pot, and it may reasonably be considered additional rake by some.

I am not considering these jackpot drops when listing the maximum rake below, since promotions and drops change too frequently for me to be sure what will be in place when you play. That's something else to keep in mind, though, as you choose where you want to go play when venturing outside the Rio this summer.

PokerStars rake adheres to a “no flop, no drop” policy, meaning that no money is taken out of hands that end on the first betting round (before the flop in Hold’em and Omaha, before Fourth Street in Stud games, and before the Draw in Draw games).

Cash Game Rake – The Lowest Online

Pre-2012, PokerStars rake structure used to be that they take 5% rake of every pot up to $2 at low stakes, $3 at mid stakes, $5 at the very highest stakes, and $0.50 in heads-up pots.

An incremental system was used, whereby no rake was taken until the pot reached certain fixed sizes, e.g. 5 cents per dollar. For example a $0.99 pot at 25nl would be rake-free, a $1.01 or $1.99 pot would both be raked 5 cents, a $2.01 pot would be raked 10 cents, and so on.

Since 2012, PokerStars now uses a linear rake system which starts raking from the first cent. This on the surface is bad news for players, but to compensate PokerStars lowered the 5% figure and the size of the rake caps. Overall rake levels were made even lower – especially for microstakes players – and PokerStars remains the site with the lowest rake online.

Tournament Rake is 6-10%

Tournament buy-ins are divided into two separate pieces: one large piece for the prize pool, and a smaller piece to cover PokerStars’ hosting costs. This latter piece represents the “rake” of the tournament, and it is typically is between 6-10% of the total buy-in.

All tournament buy-ins on PokerStars are described using this two-part system. So in a $100 + $9 tournament, for example, for each entry, $100 goes to the prize pool and $9 rake goes to PokerStars.

PokerStars Rake Calculation

PokerStars uses the weighted-contributed method to calculate rake contribution. This means that for every hand, you receive rake credit proportionally based on how much you contribute to the size of the pot.

If you fold preflop, you earn no rakeback, and for all heads-up pots you play you share the rewards equally with your opponent. In a three-handed pot where all three players see the river and the pot was raked $3, you’ll receive a percentage rakeback credit for $1 of rake each – i.e. if you earn about 50% rakeback as a repeat Supernova VIP, you’ll receive $0.50 in rewards for that pot.

PokerStars rakeback comes in the form of Frequent Player Points (FPPs) that are awarded to players based on how much rake they contribute, which can then be converted to cash at the PokerStars VIP Store. There are also stellar rewards and milestone bonuses for hitting new VIP levels.

Overall, PokerStars rakeback returns range from 12% to 74% based on VIP level.
